How Can We Use It?
Our actions come out of our thinking... the mindset or consciousness we hold.
For many of us, our usual ways of creating change aren't bringing the results we really want. Pushing people to buy, hire or believe us... convincing them to act differently... criticizing or attacking those who disagree with us... or trying to control others so they do what we want... These approaches are draining our energy, causing more conflict, fear & mistrust around us, and leaving us with pain inside.
What are Our Real Goals?
I believe we are here to create a different 'environment': A culture and climate of freedom, respect and value. Growing meaningful and satisfying work, and powerful, rich relationships. Fostering trust and collaboration. And creating a happier, healthier, more sustainable world. IF those are what we really want, then our thoughts, actions, and ways of relating have to be aligned with these. We will need to connect the "ends" and the "means."
Conscious change is about becoming more conscious of these goals, and the mindset we are using to create change. It's becoming aware of the thoughts & feelings behind what we say and do. (e.g. Are our actions coming from love, or fear & need?) It's seeing our effects on others, our environment, and our own lives. And making conscious choices that lead to the results we really want.
How do we Do this?
This approach isn't about telling people how to act; it's growing the environment, the climate of what we want to experience.
Every action has a consciousness (thoughts, feelings & beliefs) behind it. And it communicates these to others through what we do. Actions come out of the consciousness we hold; and when we shift mindsets, we act differently. For example, our frustration or anger gets expressed in unkind words (or 'kind' ones that have a 'sting' behind them.) On the other hand, our desire to be compassionate leads us to take more compassionate actions. People both see them, and feel what's behind them. Our behaviour then reinforces the consciousness we've chosen in others, and in ourselves.
Behaviour change alone focuses only on the surface, the actions. But what's most important is how people think and feel -- because this is what motivates their choices and actions in the long term. Therefore it's how we treat them -- and the consciousness we help them to grow in the process -- that creates long-term positive change.
Example: The Blue Box (recycling program)
- Connecting behaviour change + consciousness change
Steps for growing Conscious Change
Here are some of the actions I've found helpful:
Equally valuable are personal practices which strengthen our whole-self mindset, rather than our fearful, separate-self thinking. Practices such as centering, mindfulness, meditation, prayer, deep relaxation, and intention all assist in deepening our awareness and presence.
And all of these approaches can be used anywhere we want to contribute to positive change in our lives: Work. Relationships. Health. Personal growth. The environment. Social change. Families. Organizations...

Here are some of the actions I've found helpful:
- listening more deeply
- looking beyond the surface, and seeing situations and people differently
- connecting with where others are, and building bridges of understanding
- finding and building upon shared interests
- drawing on intuition, and expressing our deeper truths
- shifting from "pushing or forcing" change to "inspiring and empowering" it...
